Innovations in Teaching and learning by Faculty

  • Contributions of Pragati Engineering College CSE Department Faculty towards inculcating innovative means in Teaching and Learning are clearly elucidated both in our Department Records and on the Institute Website for peer review and critique. Our work is open to be enhanced or reproduced. Some of our inclusive ways are attractive presentations, interesting videos and mini projects, practice programs, contents beyond syllabus assignment questions and quizzes.

  • To improve the level of understanding in students, the following innovative teaching approaches are undertaken by the Department.

Role Play

  • It is a technique that allows students to explore realistic situations by interacting with other people in a managed way in order to develop experience and trial different strategies in a supported environment. Depending on the intention of the activity, participants might be playing a role similar to their own

  • Idea:Students are given a scenario and other options to solve a particular issue, then the students are exposed to decision making in a given environment.

  • Implementation:Some students are selected randomly. Each student is assigned a particular topic and allowed to present accordingly

Mind Maps

  • It is a visual form of note taking that offers an overview of a topic. Facilitate better understanding of relationships and connections between ideas and concepts. It Help students brainstorm and explore any idea, concept, or problem

  • Idea:Mind Maps can be used in class to brainstorm and generate discussions. This involves use of notes with keywords and images in classroom teaching.

  • Implementation:Following image is shown to students and they are asked to discuss it among themselves. Topic name (represent diagram example related to that topic)

  • Outcome:This will encourage students not only to participate but also to fully understand a topic and its nuances by creating connections between ideas. This makes students remember the topic for a longer time.

Short Presentations

  • In many subjects, students deliver Presentations to the rest of their classmates. This significantly boosts students’ confidence and their learning experience.

Student Seminars

  • In many subjects, students deliver Seminars to the rest of their classmates. This significantly boosts students’ confidence and their learning experience.
  • Idea:To make students develop communication skills and reduce the stage fear in them.
  • Implementation:Select topic
  • Each student is assigned a topic
  • Students are asked to give an explanation on the concept
  • Outcome:Bringing out the communication skills of students

ICT Supported Learning

  • ICT tools can be used to find, explore, analyze, exchange and present information responsibly and without discrimination. ICT can be employed to give users quick access to ideas and experiences from a wide range of people, communities and cultures.

  • NPTEL- SWAYAM:SWAYAM is a programme initiated by Government of India and designed to achieve the three cardinal principles of Education Policy viz., access, equity and quality. The objective of this effort is to take the best teaching learning resources to all, including the most disadvantaged. SWAYAM seeks to bridge the digital divide for students who have hitherto remained untouched by the digital revolution and have not been able to join the mainstream of the knowledge economy.

  • The National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) was initiated by seven Indian Institutes of Technology (Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Guwahati and Roorkee) along with the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 2003. Largest online repository in the world of courses in engineering, basic sciences and selected humanities and social sciences subjects.

  • Online facilities are provided to students for enrolling in various NPTEL courses. Faculty encourage the students to take get certified in NPTEL The faculty continuously guide the students and act as a mentor in solving NPTEL assignments.

Soft Skills Workshops

  • Department of CSE conducted specialized training to the faculty at Pragati Engineering College by developing state-of-the-art facilities. They conducted workshop on Soft skills which was attended by our faculty and students.
  • Implementation:Select topic
  • Students are divided into groups.
  • Each group is assigned a name based on topic selected.
  • Students are asked to give their views on the concept.
  • They are asked to prepare and give seminars on the given topics.
  • Outcome:Active participation of students. Remembering the topic for a longer time.

Group Discussion

  • To develop skills in interpersonal communication and in expressing views in a clear and concise manner

  • Idea:To make students develop communication skills

  • Students are divided into groups.

  • Each group is assigned a name based on topic selected.

  • Students are asked to give their views on the concept.

  • Outcome:Bringing out the creative thoughts of students.

Group projects:

  • Idea:To make students understand IEEE papers and implement a part of it.

  • Implementation:Students have implemented a few IEEE projects.

  • Outcome:Bringing out the creative thoughts of students.

One Minute Feedback

  • Feedback is an important part of the assessment process. It has a significant effect on student learning. It really does take about a minute and, while usually used at the end of class, it can be used at the end of any topic discussion. Its major advantage is that it provides rapid feedback on main idea of that topic.
